NC to prefer all-party banner over PAGD; Bukhari takes dig | | | Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 14: In a significant development that is being seen as the last blow to the so-called Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, the National Conference is likely to go ahead with the “all party” banner instead of the PAGD. Sources said the National Conference had been wanting to get rid of the PAGD and that it was mainly because of this that the NC recently called the all-party meeting in Jammu instead of the Gupkar alliance. “For many months they (NC people) were uncomfortable with the PAGD as the leadership was against its proceedings,” said a source on the condition of anonymity. He said the party was feeling that the PAGD had failed to deliver on any front and that it would be unwise to carry ahead with the so-called alliance. It’s pertinent to mention that even though the PAGD has been headed by NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah, he avoids any discussion on the Gupkar alliance. The arch rival of the PAGD and Apni Party President Syed Altaf Bukhari has taken a dig on the National Conference on the issue. “Why did they bury the so-called plebiscite movement, if they were sincere about it; why did they not try to get promised ‘autonomy’ for J&K even after having a two-thirds majority in the Assembly in the 1996 elections; why did they not raise their voice against August 5, 2019 occurrences even after holding all the three parliament seats from the Valley; and why didn’t they do anything to get abrogated Article 370 and 35A back even after creating a so-called alliance —PAGD — three years ago?” Bukhari asked at his recent rally in Srinagar. The last time the PAGD held a meeting was around last year. Though this year on January 12, the PAGD spokesman and CPI (M) general secretary Yusuf Tarigami had issued a statement, any major meeting of the alliance wasn’t held. Sources have been saying that the PAGD is on the deathbed. |
