NC ‘lobbies’ in Delhi for Assembly polls

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 22: Even as all-party delegation led by National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah recently called on the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) demanding Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the NC has “intensified lobbying” for the demand.
Sources said a senior leader of the NC has been lobbying hard in the national capital to seek “secret meetings” with the leaders from the Bharatiya Janta Party to convince them for holding of the Assembly elections pending since 2018 when the then Peoples Democratic Party-BJP alliance had collapsed.
Sources said the party has been in touch with some of the leaders for “back channel talks” on the issue of elections.
What is even interesting is that ahead of leading a delegation of the politicians from Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Abdullah didn’t opt for calling any meeting of the so called Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration but invited the “all party meeting.”
Senior politicians of Kashmir including former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari and Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone were conspicuous for their absence at the all party meeting called by Dr Abdullah in Jammu. Veteran politician Ghulam Nabi Azad also didn’t attend the meeting. The prospective lobbing with the saffron party has come at a point when a BJP leader from north Kashmir has said that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir could be held in September this year. Recently, BJP leader, Mohammad Maqbool War in a viral undated video clip purportedly made the claims.
The BJP leader’s statement had come two days after opposition leaders led by Dr Farooq Abdullah met the CEC. The delegation had also met the national opposition leaders at the Constitutional Club in New Delhi and apprised them of the current J&K situation and sought their support in the restoration of statehood to the erstwhile state.
The NC leaders couldn’t be contacted for comments. But a senior NC leader who spoke to the Early Times on the condition of anonymity ruled out any secret talks with the BJP.
