Awareness programme on intergenerational bonding organised at Model Academy

JAMMU, Mar 31: Model Academy, the prestigious school of MIER organised an awareness and sensitisation programme on ''Inter-Generational Bonding'' in association with National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India and Anugraha, a national NGO that works as Regional Resource & Training Centre on Ageing. The objective was to sensitize the young participants as regards intergenerational gaps and related issues and to address the challenges faced by the senior section of our society.
Resource Person of the event was Advocate Deepali Arora, a well-known Legal Expert and Social activist. She elaborated on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. This Act is legislation, introduced by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India to give more effective provision for maintenance and welfare of parents and older persons. She also highlighted the legal rights of the senior citizens.
The programme started with a film based on the status of elderly people in their families, how they are ill-treated or neglected by the family members which was followed by a heart touching talk by faculty members, Mamta Kour and Ramneet Kour. Earlier a painting competition on the theme was also organised. The students expressed their concerns and emotions about elders in society through their creative artwork. The competition was judged by Ms. Jasleen Mohial and Ms. Ruchi Sharma, members quality assurance team. All the winners were awarded with certificates and trophies.
Speaking on the occasion Rupa Gupta, Jt. Director MIER, exhorted the students to value their Indian roots and remain dutiful to aged persons around them. She advised them to see senior citizens as blessings and not a burden. The programme culminated with a vote of thanks by Manju Vali, convener CCA.
