JAMMU, Apr 3: MIER College of Education observed World Autism Day to promote awareness regarding autism among students. The theme of this year's observance is "Light It Up Blue."The event was organized to show solidarity towards people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder and to realize that individuals on the autism spectrum can be helped to lead a meaningful and productive life.
The programme started with a viewing of the short movie "Duke," which showcased the daily struggles of people with autism and also highlighted the plight of their family. After the movie, a doubt clearing session was held by the faculty of the Department of Special Education. Shivan Chib, student of B.Ed. Special Education elaborated on the causes and factors that could lead to autism spectrum disorder and highlighted some of the strategies to manage it.
The participants took part in informative activities that provided information about autism and the challenges faced by those with developmental disorders. The students also prepared posters on the theme which were displayed for the audience.
Dr. Monika Bajaj, Deputy HoD UG Department, emphasized that 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with autism, making it one of the developmental disorders with the fastest rate of growth. She also discussed the instructional methods a teacher could use when working with a student who has autism.
