Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 11: Even as a Kashmiri politician has resigned from the post of youth president from his political party, his “Gunda” remark over Pandit property in Srinagar has stoked a controversy.
Recently, in a high drama including protests over Pandit land on the outskirts of Srinagar, some officials and the politician, who is also elected representative at a civic body had locked horns.
In a purported video, which went viral on the social media, the said politician appeared on the spot to make allegedly objectionable remarks.
Referring to one land official, the elected representative told the people: “If he is Gunda, I am bigger Gunda be assured of that.”
The video went viral in administrative and political circles. Many have objected to a government official being called “Gunda”. “How can you call a government official a Gunda only to add that you are yourself an even bigger gunda? This gives a sense of Gunda Raaj and government must take note of this,” said a source on the condition of anonymity.
The sources said the controversy surrounds around sale of over fifty kanals of Pandit land in Chatterhama in 1990s.
Sources said now the person who claims to have procured the land looks ahead to presumably fence the same, which also has “huge chunk of Kah Charai.”
Some of the locals have objected to the move saying that the land be kept for public use and that no sale of the said land be allowed.
“This land is for playground and other public benefit. Why should it be taken over by anyone,” said some locals.
The officials have been saying that they were trying to implement orders but that “some forces were hindering the process.”
The sources said one of the elected representatives had alleged demanded Rs two crore nazrana “to remove the hurdles he has raised.” “There are numerous complaints but what is essentially needed is an inquiry to clear the air including that on who is the bigger gunda,” said a source in the know of the matter.
Despite repeated attempts the concerned including the politician couldn’t be contacted for comments.
But a senior official said the administration was aware of the issue.
