Late marriages ruining society
4/14/2023 10:58:01 PM

Number of unmarried youngsters is on rise in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir. A survey has revealed that in the national context, the percentage of males in the age group of 15-29 years, who are never married, rose from 20.8 per cent in 2011 to 26.1 per cent in 2019. A similar trend was observed in the case of the female population.
The percentage share of youth who never married was observed in Jammu & Kashmir was 28.1%.
The surveys which have been conducted in recent years reveal that there are varied reasons for late marriages in J&K and one among them is poverty. Another reason that leads to late marriages is the menace of dowry.
Many girls of marriageable age are unable to find the matches due to the inability of their families to meet the ingenuine demands of the bridegroom and their family.
There are other cases including education and employment and these are also instrumental in delaying marriage at an appropriate age. Getting higher qualification credentials consumes crucial years of life. The post-academic pursuit for getting adjusted, preferably with a government job, drags youth for years and it consumes a lot of time even as youth forget the count of forms they submit to get the most sought-after employment amid uncertainties.
Late marriages are taking a heavy toll on society as the infertility rate is on rise. J&K’s Total Fertility Rate (TRF) has hit a grueling demographic milestone as the Union Territory has the fifth lowest Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in the country besides the women’s TFR slipping below the replacement-level by 0.6 percent.
The late marriages are a cause of concern. It has led to the institution of marriage becoming weak with each passing day.
It’s unfortunate but true that during the past few years culture of live-in relationships has emerged across the country.
It’s high time for the society to change its mindset and encourage young people to get married so that the cultural traditions are preserved. If society keeps on making marriages a difficult task it can have far reaching consequences.
The younger generation needs to stand on its feet and say no to dowry and other expensive ostentations that are attached with the word marriage itself. In a nutshell society needs to ponder upon why the institution of marriage is becoming weak and why are youngsters losing interest in getting married.
