Sexual harassment case in SMVDU: 7 months on, ‘cosmetic’ action fails to restore faith of students
5/5/2023 11:23:20 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 5: Over seven months have passed after higher-ups of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University had announced a time-bound inquiry into allegation of sexual harassment again a teacher of the varsity but no concrete action has been taken to restore shattered confidence of the students.
Instead of taking an exemplary action to avoid reoccurrence of such incidents in future authorities have just taken some cosmetic actions to pacify the enraged students who were on agitational mood after allegation of sexual harrasment was labelled against a teacher.
Highly placed sources said that the teacher, who faced allegation of sexual harrasment, is a blue-eyed boy of higher-ups.
In September 2022, students Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra held protest against alleged sexual harrasment of female student by a teacher. After protests erupted on the SMVDU campus, University authorities ordered an inquiry, and the accused professor was sent on leave till the completion of the probe. Sources said that instead of taking strong action in this regard authorities rather tried to hush up the matter by pressurising the students.
As reported earlier the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) constituted in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has received a complaint from a female Ph.D. scholar regarding sexual harassment against a faculty member.
"The ICC headed by a senior female faculty member has initiated the inquiry proceedings into the complaint of the scholar. The University shall ensure that the inquiry is taken to its logical conclusion in a time-bound manner and action, as warranted under rules, shall be taken. Meanwhile, the faculty member has been sent on leave and relieved of his official duties till the completion of the inquiry proceedings", University had stated in an official handout after the incident in September 2022.
Students of SMVDU held protest against the causal approach of the authorities after a female scholar lodged a written complaint of sexual harassment against a professor.
Reports said that a teacher of the University had sent some vulgar messages to a female scholar.
"Not only the teacher sent some vulgar messages but he also allegedly chased the female scholar and started harassing her", reports said. The helpless female scholar along with some students had lodged a written complaint before the authorities but higher-ups on the campus allegedly tried to hush up the serious issue.
