Postmortem report comes in few days, why police haven’t collected it, asks Advocate Sawhney
Seeks SP Katra’s intervention, action against SHO and doctor

Jammu, May 4: Prominent lawyer, advocate A K Sawhney on Friday castigated Katra Police for failing to discharge its duties in case of a teenage girl’s death who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hotel in Katra town on April 9, 2023.
Talking to Early Times advocate Sawhney said, “Nearly one month has passed since the day the body of the victim was found hanging with a ceiling fan in the hotel in which she was working. Till date Police haven’t collected the postmortem report.”
“It hardly takes 2 or 3 days for the postmortem report to come. Why it hasn’t been collected and why the doctor has not submitted it. Till date we don’t even know the cause of the death. Police have not even started investigations into the matter,” he said.
Advocate Sawhney said, “Had it been a suicide by now it should have come to fore. But it seems that Police are trying to hushup the matter. Either the Station House Officer is incompetent or he is deliberately not carrying out the investigation. A probe should be ordered to know the cause of delay, till now, even the FIR has not been registered. If the SHO is a deadwood he should be dismissed from the service.”
He said, “Superintendent of Police Katra or Deputy Commissioner should take the cognizance of the matter and intervene. Either a Special Investigation Team (SIT) should be formed or the matter should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).”
Advocate Sawhney said, “Police haven’t even collected the relevant evidence in the case. Shirt of the deceased girl is with her father. Fan and rope are somewhere. It’s unfortunate that Police are allowing the destruction of evidence and in that case they are conspirators and action would be taken against them.”
He urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take a note of the matter and constitute a SIT or handover the case to CBI. “We are ready to provide all the legal help to the victim’s family. Their daughter had gone to Katra for a job but her body was handed over to her. Proper investigation should be held to ascertain her cause of death,” advocate Sawhney said.
