Explore possibility of registering a case, file status report: HC to Katra Police
Teenage girl found dead in hotel

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 12: The Jammu & Kashmir High Court has taken up a petition filed against the Katra Police regarding an alleged murder case of a teenage girl found hanging in a hotel in Katra on April 9, 2023.
Petitioner Basant Lal, father of the victim, has accused the police of failing to register a FIR and demanded an impartial investigation into the matter.
The petitioner alleged that his teenage daughter was murdered in Katra on April 9, 2023. However, despite their repeated pleas, the police had not taken any action or initiated an investigation into the case.
To seek justice for their daughter, who was working at the hotel where she was found dead, the petitioner approached the High Court for intervention.
In response to the petition, Justice MA Chowdhary presided over the case and ordered the respondents to explore the possibility of registration of case and file a status report.
The court issued notice to the respondents, including the Katra police, and granted two weeks to file their response. The court emphasized the importance of a detailed status report from the official respondents regarding the progress of the investigation.
Furthermore, the court instructed the respondents to explore the possibility of registering the case and submitting a status report within the given timeframe. The private respondents will be served notice once the requisites are filed by the petitioners’ counsel.
The case has garnered significant attention, shedding light on the alleged negligence of the Katra police in responding to the complaint.
The next hearing is scheduled for May 29, 2023, during which the court will assess the progress made by the respondents in registering the case and provide updates on the investigation. The outcome of this case is eagerly awaited, as it holds significant implications for the delivery of justice in the region.
The Jammu & Kashmir High Court’s intervention in this case highlights its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
It’s in place to mention here that Basant Lal father of the victim earlier this month had told reporters that “Katra Police were trying to hush-up the murder case of his daughter by passing it as a suicide. He had made a fervent appeal to the government to handover the case of his daughter to the CBI.
Lal had raised questions over police not collecting the postmortem report even one month after his daughter was found dead.
Lal had alleged that he was not even allowed to talk to the colleagues of his daughter. “Neither police sealed the room where she was found dead, nor did it collect any evidence,” he had alleged.
