Mayor raises awareness on Polythene Ban at GGM Science College

JAMMU, May 17: GGM Science College, in collaboration with Jammu Municipal Corporation, organized a special awareness cum interactive session on the polythene ban, transforming it into a mass movement involving youth participation in educational institutions. The event took place under the auspices of India's G-20 Presidency. Shri Rajinder Sharma, the Honorable Mayor of Jammu, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, with Shri Baldev Singh Baloria, Deputy Mayor of Jammu, as the Guest of Honor. The program was successfully conducted under the able guidance of Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gupta, the college's Principal. Dr. Anil Kumar Verma, Dr. Vinod Bakshi, Prof. Raj Kumar Gupta, and Prof. Hitesh Basotra provided valuable supervision. Dr. Deepali Mahajan, NSS Program Officer, and Prof. Preeti Dogra, Eco club convenor, along with the team, including Dr. Pankaj Bandhoria, Dr. Devinder Kumar Sharma, Dr. Sham Singh, Dr. Lakhwinder Singh, Prof. Kiran, and Prof. Jyotdeep, coordinated the program.
The session commenced with the national anthem followed by Saraswati Vandana. An informative documentary highlighting the ecological impact of plastic pollution was screened, raising awareness among the attendees. A debate competition on the topic "Why Polythene Should be Banned?" was also held, where students presented well-researched arguments and engaged in a spirited exchange of ideas. The debate was judged by Dr. Poonam Kamotra, Dr. Deepa Mattoo, and Dr. Chanchal Angral. Anil Kumar Sharma from Sem V secured the 1st position, while Damandeep Singh, also from Sem V, secured the 2nd position. The 3rd position was shared by Akriti Sharma of Sem II and Ananya Gupta of Sem IV. Honorable Mayor Jammu presented certificates to the winners.
Furthermore, an impactful skit performed by NSS volunteers highlighted the adverse consequences of polythene usage and emphasized the importance of adopting eco-friendly alternatives. In commemoration of the occasion and as a symbol of commitment towards a clean and green Jammu, a sapling was planted in the college premises by the Honorable Mayor.
In his address, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gupta urged the audience to embrace sustainable alternatives to polythene and make conscious choices in their daily lives. The Honorable Mayor commended the college for organizing a wonderful session and stressed the need for collective efforts to eliminate the use of polythene, envisioning a cleaner and greener future for Jammu. The Deputy Mayor emphasized the significance of youth engagement in environmental initiatives and encouraged students to become ambassadors of change. The program was skillfully conducted by Prof. Preeti Dogra, Head of the Department of Environmental Studies, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Deepali Mahajan, NSS Program Officer.
