MeT predicts widespread rain in plains, moderate snowfall in J&K higher reaches

Srinagar, May 23: Meteorological Department on Tuesday predicted widespread rain in plains and moderate to heavy snowfall over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir till May 26.
The Met office has also issued "Yellow color" (be aware) weather warning for Jammu and Kashmir during May 23-26.
It said today the weather generally will remain cloudy at most places of Kashmir and partly cloudy at most places of the Jammu region with chances of rain, thunderstorm very likely to commence at most places from late afternoon onwards.
Widespread Light to moderate rain, thunder coupled with lightning with a Possibility of Hailstorm & strong gusty winds at a few places on May 24, the Met office said and added there is a possibility of moderate to heavy snowfall over higher reaches also.
It said Intermittent rain or thunderstorm at scattered places in Jammu and Kashmir during May 25-26 while the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy from May 27-29.
It has also warned that due to rains the low-lying rivulets and the low-lying areas may be waterlogged and hailstorm and lightning in some places may cause damage.
There could be a temporary disruption of surface transportation, especially on Srinagar- Jammu, Zojila, Mughal Road, Sinthan Top and other higher reaches of the J&K. Srinagar recorded a low of 14.8 degree Celsius on Tuesday against 13.0 degree Celsius on the previous night and it was 3.1 degree Celsius above normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund had a low of 10.8 degree Celsius against 9.0 degree Celsius on the previous night and it was above normal by 0.5 degree Celsius for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 10.2 degree Celsius against 6.2 degree Celsius on the previous night and it was 4.0 degree Celsius above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Kupwara settled at 12.6 degree Celsius against 9.4 degree Celsius on the previous night and it was 2.2 degree Celsius above normal for the north Kashmir area.
Kokernag recorded a low of 11.6 degree Celsius against 11.8 degree Celsius on the previous night and it was 1.5 degree Celsius above normal for the picnic place of south Kashmir.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 9.0 degree Celsius against 9.5 degree Celsius on the previous night and it was above normal by 2.2 degree Celsius for the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, the Met office said.
