G20 in Srinagar
5/23/2023 10:58:44 PM
Beating of drums and trumpets marked the commencement of G20 summit in Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the first international event being held in Kashmir after the scrapping of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
It’s for the first time in the past thirty years that Kashmir is not observing a shutdown on the occasion of foreign dignitaries visiting the Valley.
Separatists, who used to give shutdown calls and sponsor violence, have become irrelevant in Kashmir after the abrogation of J&K’s special status.
The G20 delegates were given a rousing reception at Srinagar Airport and life went on normally in Kashmir. Attempts were made by the people sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) to call for a shutdown and instigate the people but there were no takers for their calls as people don’t respond to such calls anymore.
Jammu and Kashmir hosting G20 meeting is an honour for its people as it has put the Union Territory on the global map.
The ongoing summit has attracted the attention of international media. The J&K has got international recognition and the event is all set to promote tourism and create more employment opportunities for the people. After India assumed the G20 presidency for the year 2023, New Delhi announced that one of the G20 summits would be held in J&K. This had triggered a sharp reaction from Pakistan. It tried to influence the G20 countries by once again raising the Kashmir bogey but the participants didn’t pay much attention to the hue and cry raised by India’s neighbor.
Barring China and Turkey, two close allies of Pakistan, all other G20 countries have sent their delegates to Srinagar and they are a part of the ongoing Tourism Working Group meeting.
J&K hosting the G20 summit is a big diplomatic victory for India and Pakistan’s defeat. The world has acknowledged India’s stand and has rejected the fake propaganda of its neighbor.
The meet has provided an opportunity to the Union Territory to showcase its culture, tourism potential and hospitality to the world. New Delhi’s decision to choose Srinagar as a venue for the event has driven home a point that the era of violence has ended and J&K is progressing.
