REASI, June 2: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, under the guidance of Director Extension, Prof. SK Gupta of SKUAST-J, organized a one-day exposure visit for trainees participating in the 15-day certificate course on Integrated Nutrient Management (INM). The visit took place in Talwara village, Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head, and Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist of KVK, Reasi, showcased various farming technologies used by local farmers.
KVK scientists informed the participants about KVK's initiatives in promoting organic and natural farming in the area. The trainees were taken to witness vermicompost units, organic turmeric and ginger fields, organic vegetable fields, Kadaknath and Chabro Poultry units, and other progressive organic farms in the area. Organic farmers shared their experiences, discussed organic inputs such as Farm Yard Manures (FYM), cow urine, vermicompost, and biopesticides used in organic farming, and highlighted the economic returns and challenges they face.
Dr. Banarsi emphasized that KVK, Reasi is actively upgrading the knowledge of organic farmers through awareness programs, training, demonstrations, exposure visits, and other initiatives. The aim is to promote eco-friendly agriculture and ensure the production of safe and healthy food. He emphasized the importance of organic and natural farming for the environment and all living organisms. KVK has organized five-day training programs specifically focused on organic farming, enabling farmers to increase their organic crop production through scientific methods.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi highlighted the deteriorating soil health due to the excessive use of agrochemicals and discussed practices such as crop rotation, pulses production, multiple cropping, and microbial cultures in organic farming. He also informed the participants about KVK's efforts in establishing commodity villages in the district. During the field visit, trainees asked various questions, which were satisfactorily answered by the scientists and progressive farmers. The trainees were impressed by the successful results achieved by the progressive farmers in the area. The visit was organized with the assistance of Manohar Lal and concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Banarsi Lal.
