GMC celebrates world donors day

JAMMU, June 17: The Department of Transfusion Medicine at Government Medical College Jammu, in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society, National Health Mission J&K UT, and ISBTI J&K UT Chapter, organized the celebration of World Blood Donor Day 2023 on June 17, 2023. The event aimed to honor and express gratitude to all Voluntary Blood Donor Organizations, Voluntary Blood Donors, Motivators, and Camp Organizers involved in regular voluntary blood donation.
More than 50 voluntary Blood Donor Organizations, including Sant Nirankari Mandal, Thalassemia Society, Military & Paramilitary forces, Youth organizations, SKUAST Jammu, NHPC Salal, IIT Jammu, NCC, and NSS incharges of various colleges in the Jammu region and the University of Jammu, attended the event.
Dr. Vijay Sawhney, Associate Professor, highlighted the importance of World Blood Donor Day, while Dr. Meena Sidhu, Professor & Head, delivered the welcome address. She explained the theme of the World Blood Donor Day 2023, "Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often," and emphasized the significance of blood safety through regular voluntary blood donation.
Miss Ayushi Sudan IAS, Mission Director, NHM J&K UT, emphasized the role and support of NHM in enhancing Blood Transfusion Services, particularly the implementation of NAT testing of Blood Units in J&K UT.
Dr. Shashi Sudhan Sharma, Principal & Dean, Govt. Medical College Jammu, expressed her gratitude to voluntary blood donors and organizations for their selfless service to humanity. She urged their continued support in achieving 100% voluntary blood donation in J&K.
Bhupinder Kumar IAS, Administrative Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department, J&K UT, stressed the important role of regular voluntary blood donors and organizations in providing safe blood to patients in need. He emphasized the need for unified efforts by these organizations toward this noble cause. He also highlighted the government's advancements and the introduction of new techniques to facilitate adequate and safe Blood Transfusion Services in the UT.
Dr. T.R. Raina, Dy. President (Motivational), ISBTI National Body, discussed the role of a yogic way of life in voluntary blood donation by promoting a healthy body and mind.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Ashwani Khajuria, Administrator GMC Jammu, Ajit Singh Parmukh Zonal Incharge Sant Nirankari Mandal Jammu, Dr. Ghanisham Saini HOD Pediatrics, Dr. Sanjeev Digra Prof. Pediatrics, Dr. Manoj Chalotra Medical Superintendent SSH Jammu, and Hon. Secretary Regional Red Cross Society Sat Pal Sharma. HODs and faculty members from various departments of Govt. Medical College Jammu also attended the event.
To commemorate this global event, the Department organized a painting competition, slogan writing competition, and more than 20 blood donation camps throughout the month of June. In the painting competition, Palvinder Kour from GGM Science College Jammu secured the first prize, followed by Aakriti Sharma from GGM Science College Jammu in second place, and Memona Arif from GMC Jammu in third place. In the slogan writing competition, Muskaan Mahajan received the first prize, while Adil Qureshi and Achyut from SPMR College of Commerce Jammu won the second and third prizes, respectively.
Voluntary blood donors were also honored during the event.
