Punjab-based narco smuggler sentenced to 10 years RI and Rs 1 lakh fine | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 17: In a significant verdict, Principal Sessions Judge Udhampur, Haq Nawaz Zargar, handed down a 10-year rigorous imprisonment term and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Daljeet Singh, a narco smuggler hailing from Kapurthala, Punjab. The sentencing came after the recovery of 65 kilograms of poppy straw from the accused. According to the prosecution, Daljeet Singh was caught red-handed during routine checking while transporting the significant quantity of poppy straw in a truck from Srinagar to Jammu on June 29, 2017. The police registered a case and assigned the investigation to SI Thakur Dutt. After careful examination of the evidence presented by Public Prosecutor Koshal Kotwal, Principal Sessions Judge Haq Nawaz Zargar concluded that the prosecution's case was clear, consistent, and stood up to legal scrutiny. The accused failed to discredit the credibility of the prosecution witnesses, further reinforcing the charges leveled against him under sections 8 and 15 (i) (a) of the NDPS Act. Considering the aggravating and mitigating factors, the court deemed that a sentence of ten years' rigorous imprisonment would serve the interests of justice. Consequently, Daljeet Singh, son of Kashmir Singh and a resident of Kapurthala, Sunder Nagar Tehsil Kapurthala, Punjab, was sentenced to undergo ten years of rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh. In the event of failure to pay the fine, an additional one-year rigorous imprisonment would be imposed. The period of imprisonment already served during the investigation and trial would be taken into account. —JNF |
