NEW DELHI, June 17: Harsh Dev Singh, NPP President and former Minister, called for the restoration of statehood and the installation of a democratically elected government in J&K. Speaking at a seminar organized by the "Centre for Peace and Progress" at the India International Centre in New Delhi, Singh criticized the BJP regime for causing resentment among the people of J&K through their actions. He expressed concern over the revocation of Article 370, the downgrading of J&K to a Union Territory, and the denial of elections, which he claimed had hurt the sentiments of the people.
Singh alleged that the BJP-led government was subverting democracy and continuing its rule through backdoor mechanisms, denying the people their democratic rights. He criticized the appointment of bureaucrats from outside the state to govern J&K and highlighted the lack of connect between these bureaucrats and the local population. Singh argued that the political process had become defunct, political parties were discredited and discouraged, and opposition parties were suppressed, resulting in tensions in the valley and other parts of J&K.
Emphasizing the importance of a legitimate, elected government in dealing with challenges, Singh questioned the repeated postponement of Assembly Elections in J&K. He called for the initiation of the political process and the restoration of popular rule in J&K, urging the center to engage with political parties rather than relying on outside bureaucrats. Singh stressed that the elected government, due to its accessibility and proximity to the common people, could effectively combat cross-border terrorism.
Singh criticized the vested interests within the bureaucracy, which he believed were obstructing the restoration of democratic government in J&K. He highlighted instances where promises of elections were made but not fulfilled, and he called on social and political organizations to contribute to the revival of democracy and the preservation of the Constitution and rule of law in J&K.
