Early Times Report

Jammu, June 19: Even as the National Conference, President and Member Parliament Dr Farooq Abdullah heads the so called Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration which seeks the “restoration of the special status” of Jammu and Kashmir, the NC is willing contest Assembly elections even without the restoration of the statehood. A senior NC leader while speaking at a civil society meeting in Delhi said his party was ready for Assembly elections even if statehood is not restored before that.
“Elections need to be held in (Jammu and Kashmir) whether the statehood is restored after the elections of before that,” the NC leader said.
Some other politicians from Jammu and Kashmir and members of the civil society were also present at the event held in the national capital.
Interestingly the NC leader did speak about the demand for the restoration of the so called special status but didn’t link with the Assembly elections. The development has taken place at a time when some of the political rivals of the NC have been claiming that the “grand old party was softening its posture” towards the Bharatiya Janta Party.
Many of the senior politicians of Kashmir from the rival camps have been saying that the NC was likely to form government in alliance with the BJP “if given such a chance.”
Observers said NC which had been spearheading the so called restoration of the special status is now wiling to contest elections even without statehood.
“See how much the NC has changed in the last five years that the party which didn’t formally contest Urban local body polls last time is now ready to contest Assembly elections without statehood. Actually it’s all about Kissa Kursi Ka,” said a political analyst.
Despite repeated attempts the NC leader was not available for comments.
Pertinently on August 5, 2019, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had told the Parliament that statehood would be restored in JK once situation become conducive.
