Supreme Court to hear Harsh Dev’s petition for early J&K assembly elections

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 4: The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on July 6th for the writ petition filed by Harsh Dev Singh, former minister and advocate, seeking early assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The petition aims to restore the democratic process in the region, which has been in a state of silence from the Government of India (GOI) and the Election Commission of India (ECI).
According to the cause list issued by the Supreme Court registry, a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India will preside over the matter in Court No. 1. Harsh Dev Singh emphasized the necessity of early elections in J&K, stating that any delay would undermine democracy and disregard the Supreme Court’s orders. He criticized the ruling party at the center for using frivolous excuses to deny the people of J&K their democratic rights.
Singh highlighted the importance of a full-time elected government to address the armed insurgency and multiple issues facing the Union Territory. He noted that the armed militancy had subsided after the formation of elected governments in the past but resurfaced during the central government’s rule. He warned that any further delay in holding free and fair elections could worsen the volatile situation in the UT.
Drawing attention to the growing tensions and the administration’s failure to meet people’s expectations, Singh argued that bureaucratic rule was insufficient to address the ongoing crisis. He criticized the disconnect between the LG administration and the masses, noting that the unemployed, semi-employed, and contractual workers faced significant hardships without any avenue to voice their grievances. The rural population, in particular, suffered from a lack of basic amenities and limited access to those in power, leading to growing alienation.
In summary, the hearing in the Supreme Court regarding Harsh Dev Singh’s petition seeking early assembly elections in J&K holds crucial significance for the restoration of democracy and addressing the pressing issues faced by the Union Territory.
