Cong treads cautious path, maintains silence

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 4: While all non-BJP parties in Jammu and Kashmir welcome the decision of the Supreme Court to hear petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370, Congress has maintained a guarded silence on this issue.
Instead of “celebrating” this decision of the Apex Court like other political parties, Congress is treading cautiously on this highly emotive issue. Not even a single Congress leader has given any statement on the decision of the Apex Court.
Since the abrogation of Article 370, Congress leadership is avoiding echoing the demand of restoring this article. From time and again all Congress leaders had avoided raising the issue of Article 370.
During a recent meeting of the J&K Congress, all issues pertaining to the Union Territory was thoroughly discussed but party leaders could not raise the demand of reinstating Article 370 and 35-A.
Interestingly Congress leadership had demanded statehood with constitutional guarantees, but the party has not elaborated on "constitutional guarantees."
Meanwhile, political parties in Jammu & Kashmir have welcomed the move.
“Welcome Hon’ble SC’s decision to finally hear petitions pending since 2019 challenging the illegal abrogation of Article 370. I hope justice is upheld & delivered for the people of J&K. The SC ruling on Article 370 maintained that the provision can be abrogated only on the recommendation of the J&K constituent assembly,” former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted.
Former Chief Minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah said that he is looking forward to the Supreme Court hearings on Article 370.
“Finally the bench is constituted. I look forward to the hearings beginning in right earnest now,” Omar tweeted.
Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Ghulam Nabi Azad welcomed the notice issued by the Supreme Court to hear a batch of petitions challenging abrogation of the Article 370 on July 11.
In a statement, Ghulam Nabi Azad said: “It’s has been after a long time that the Supreme Court has taken note of the petitions challenging abrogation of Article 370. I am hopeful of a positive outcome as I aspire for the restoration of full rights which got annulled following the abrogation on August 5, 2019.
