Harsh urges VK Singh to expedite Udhampur-Ghordi road completion

NEW DELHI, July 7: Harsh Dev Singh, former Minister and State President of JKNPP, has submitted a memorandum to V.K Singh, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, urging him to ensure the early completion of the Udhampur-Ghordi road in Udhampur District. The appeal aligns with the assurance given by Nitin Gadkari during his visit to Ghordi in 2014.
Harsh Dev informed the Union Minister that Mr. Gadkari had made a public commitment to double-lane the 38 km road from Udhampur to Ghordi. He had assured the immediate commencement and timely completion of the project during his address to a large gathering. However, despite initial work being initiated under the CRF (Central Road Fund), it was abandoned after straightening a few curves. Consequently, only around 8-9 km out of the total 38 km has been double-laned, leaving the majority of the road in a dilapidated condition.
When the public raised concerns about the incomplete project, they were informed that the funds under CRF had been halted by the central government. Additionally, it was stated that approximately 18 km of the single-lane stretch would be black-topped under PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana), but double-laning was not feasible. Furthermore, there were no funds available for the black-topping and upgradation of the remaining 10 km of the single-lane road up to Kaldi, which is currently in an unfit state for traffic.
One of the most significant issues highlighted by Harsh Dev was the absence of a bridge over the river Tawi at Salmay, falling on the alignment of the road. With approximately 1,000 vehicles using the road daily to serve a population of over 1.5 lakh, the absence of a bridge has inconvenienced numerous commuters. Instead, an aqueduct constructed by the PDC (Power Development Corporation) is being used for crossing the river, despite being declared unsafe for traffic around 20 years ago.
Harsh Dev expressed disappointment at the lack of serious attention given to the commitments and directions of the central minister, which has resulted in public outcry and dissatisfaction.
He appealed to the Union Minister of State for the construction of the promised double-lane road from Udhampur to Ghordi, along with the bridge at Salmay, as committed during the public rally in 2014. This completion would bring much-needed relief to the local population.
