After SMC, JMC to levy tax on power consumption
7/10/2023 10:55:47 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 10: Even as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation or SMC has decided to levy 2 paisa per unit tax on consumption of electricity in the summer capital, the Jammu Municipal Corporation or JMC is all set to follow the footprints.
Sources close to the administration told the Early Times that the JMC will soon take up the issue of levying 2 paisa unit from the domestic and commercial consumers of Jammu City.
Sources said a formal letter in this regard will be sent to the Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited or JPDCL.
Sources said the tax would be
mandatory for all the consumers and that the same would be diverted into the JMC accounts for use for public good.
It’s pertinent to mention that the SMC recently shot a letter to the Managing Director, Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited, seeking “Imposition of levy on Consumption of Electricity.”
“In pursuance of sub-Section 2 (e) of Section 84 of J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation is empwered to impose Tax on the consumption of energy for every unit of electricity consumed by any person within the Municipal area,” the letter said.
“Subsequently the Srinagar Municipal Corporation in the 14th Session of its General Council meeting held on 23 September 2021 approved the proposal of imposition of levy on the consumption of electricity at the rate of Two Paisa for every unit of electricity consumed by any person within the Municipal area. Copy of Resolution and Minutes of General Council meeting are enclosed herewith for ready reference,” the letter added.
“It is therefore, requested that collection of levy on behalf of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation may kindly be made as per the above rate for electricity consumed in Srinagar city. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation will use the funds so collected for clearing electricity usage charges used by the Corporation on account of its various assets.”
A senior official said a similar correspondence would be made by the JMC with the JPDCL.
