SAMBA, July 20: A three day training programme on 'Early Detection of Drug Abuse and Post Detection Management' was held on Thursday here in the Conference Hall, DC office Complex Samba.
The programme has been organized on the direction of Deputy Commissioner,Abhishek Sharma, involving Social Welfare, School Education and other line departments.
At the outset, District Social Welfare Officer, Nawaaz Sharif welcomed the participants and highlighted different issues associated with drug Abuse.
In his address, the DC Samba stressed the need for early identification of individuals struggling with drug abuse. He asked the stakeholders to devise an all inclusive action plan to deal effectively with the possible challenges in the fight against the Drug menace.
The Deputy Commissioner opined that the Drug abuser shall not be stigmatized. "Instead of treating them as criminals, the approach should be to treat them as victims and encourage them to quit the drugs through proper sensitization and trust building" he said. The DC sought to focus on identifying the perpetrators who are the root cause of the problem. He stressed on inter-departmental synergy while dealing with the problem.
He stressed that teachers should try to identify the students who exhibit possible signs of drug abuse like falling grades, anti-social behavior, missing school classes etc. Anganwadi workers of ICDS can also be instrumental in identifying possible drug abusers due to their strong linkages in the grassroots level. "The District administration intends to bring in a permanent mechanism to mitigate the menace of drug abuse in educational institutions," he added.
The purpose of holding the workshop is to bring all stakeholders together to deliberate upon and come out with an effective plan to tackle drug abuse. "The drug abuse must be eliminated by small steps in the right direction i.e from one family to one village and subsequently the entire district," he said.
