Land mafia on prowl: SMC awaits FIR in Govt land grab

Jammu, July 20: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has asked the Jammu and Kashmir Police to register FIR into the grab of prized government land in the summer capital of Srinagar.
Official documents accessed by the Early Times reveal that the SMC’s Chief Revenue Officer has asked the Police Station Safa Kadal to file case into the land grab of the civic body in Chattabal area of Srinagar.
“Registration of FIR against the miscreants/trespassers of Municipal Land at Baghi Nand Singh Chattabal Srinagar under survey No.139 and 437 measuring 11 Kanals and 10 Marlas in Estate Rampora Chattabal ujnder relevant provisions of Indian Penal Code,” reads the application SMC/ Est-407-09 dated June 28 2023.
“It is to submit here that the report h have been received vide No.SMC/W-23/153-54 dated 27-06-2023 from the concerned ward officer ward No. 23 that the estate belonging to Srinagar Municipal Corporation situated at Baghi Nand Singh Chattabal under survey No. referred supra in the subject is being illegally encroached by some miscreants allegedly the local Corporator/Public Representative and they are doing earth filling illegally on the property belonging to the Corporation,” the complaint reads.
“The encroachers are trying to encroach the patch of land and innumerable of times the same has been resisted and every now and then encroachment has been removed. Pertinent to mention here that few weeks back the land has been encroached wherein tin fencing has been installed late at night but due to the swift action of the field staff and timely reporting the authorities thereby swung into action and removed the encroachment with the demolition squad,” the complaint added.
“Pertinent to mention here that last night also the encroachers again tried to do earth filling and installing tin sheds which has again been restrained and resisted but they are trespassing the land with ill motive and criminal intent. In view of the above, it is requested that an FIR be lodged as against the miscreant/trespassers under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code to that
the culprit be brought to books,” reads the complaint filed on June 26, 2023.
Sources said the civic body expecting the registration of the FIR under relevant section in the coming days.
When contacted a senior official at the SMC said a complaint has been filed and that registration of FIR was expected.
