Early Times Report
REASI, July 21: KVK Reasi, a part of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), organized a training program focused on "Entrepreneurship Development in Organic Poultry Farming" at Talwara village in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. The program witnessed the active participation of numerous local farmers from the area and was conducted under the guidance of Prof. SK Gupta, Director Extension at SKUAST-Jammu.
During the training, Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, highlighted the immense potential for organic poultry farming in the hilly areas of Reasi district. He emphasized that organic poultry farming could significantly contribute to increasing farmers' income and generating employment opportunities in the region. Dr. Lal provided insights into entrepreneurship development in organic poultry farming, urging the participants to consider adopting organic practices in their poultry farms.
The training covered various aspects of organic poultry farming, including organic management techniques for poultry farms, low-cost organic poultry feed, and the use of Azolla feed for poultry birds to reduce cultivation costs. Dr. Lal encouraged farmers to establish Azolla units on their farms to facilitate cost-effective poultry farming. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of providing constant outdoor access to poultry birds for a natural diet comprising grains and forages.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, during the training, emphasized the efforts made by KVK Reasi to promote agri-entrepreneurship in rural areas, aiming to increase income and employment opportunities for farmers. He discussed the horti-poultry model, which enables farmers to benefit from both horticulture and poultry farming. Dr. Qureshi advocated the adoption of horti-poultry models in the region.
The training session facilitated open discussions, with farmers raising various queries related to organic poultry farming. The KVK scientists addressed these queries satisfactorily, providing valuable insights to the farmers.
KVK Reasi has also conducted demonstrations on Kadaknath and Chabro variety egg-laying poultry birds in the area, attracting interest from new farmers. As part of the program, a field visit was arranged for progressive poultry farmers, providing them with practical exposure and knowledge.
The training program concluded with Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi extending a formal vote of thanks, appreciating the participation and enthusiasm shown by the farmers. The initiative by KVK Reasi is expected to contribute significantly to the promotion and adoption of organic poultry farming techniques in the region, fostering sustainable agricultural practices and rural entrepreneurship.
