Early Times Report

Jammu, July 29: State Election Commissioner, B R Sharma and Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jammu and Kashmir, P K Pole have sounded the poll bugle for the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in the Union Territory.
These highly anticipated elections, according to the analysts, are expected to determine the future of the Kashmir-based parties, particularly the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “Both the major parties, having dominated the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir for the past several years, face a critical test in these elections. These parties had boycotted the ULB polls in 2018 claiming that these elections won’t serve any purpose,” an analyst told Early Times.
He said, “But in the recent past leaders of both the parties have admitted that staying away from the ULB polls was a mistake.”
He said, “Now, both these parties are eagerly waiting for these elections to be held. The performance of these parties in the ULB polls will reveal whether the people of the region still trust and support them, or if they are ready to embrace new political alternatives.”
An observer said, “These elections are particularly crucial for both the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, as they aim to regain the lost ground and reaffirm their relevance in the current political scenario, which has changed completely after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.”
“The ULB polls are also as an opportunity for new and emerging political parties, as well as independent candidates, to make their mark in the region. The success or failure of these parties will indicate whether the people are willing to experiment with new political ideologies and approaches,” he said, adding, “While the performance of the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party in these elections would be matter of immense interest, the outcome will also have wider implications for the political stability and dynamics of the Union Territory. The results may shape the future course of governance in Jammu and Kashmir and determine the agenda and policies that will drive the region forward. The upcoming elections will not only test the popularity and acceptability of the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party but will also decide the trajectory of politics in the region. These polls will set the stage for the upcoming Assembly elections, expected to take place in the near future.”
