Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 7: In a major shock for the regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress made a breakthrough on August 7 as leaders from parties including Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal, the Apni Party led by Altaf Bukhari and the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) led by veteran politician Ghulam Nabi Azad joined the “grand old party.”
Several former ministers and lawmakers, including Yashpal Kundal of the AAP, Haji Abdul Rashid Dar of the Ghulam Nabi Azad’s DPAP and Aga Farooq of the Apni Party joined Congress in the national capital at the residence of party chief Mallikarjun Kharge. According to the Congress 21 leaders joined the Congress.
In a major setback for the AAP, its leader and former minister, Kundal, joined the Congress.
Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, a former General Secretary, DPAP and two times Legislator, former Vice-Chairman of J&K Handicraft with MoS status, also joined the Congress.
Even Working Committee member of Azad’s DPAP, Naresh K Gupta also joined the Congress. He was also the vice-president of DPAP Jammu Province.
DPAP’s General Secretary of Jammu Province Sham Lal Bhagat and also from Azad’s Doda district joined the Congress.
Namrata Sharma of Aam Aadmi Party also joined the Congress.
Sources said the party was waiting to the Rahul Gandhi’s return to the Parliament to celebrate the moment.
The sources said the development has unnerved most of the regional parties of Jammu and Kashmir who believe their cadres could also change sides.
Sources said the Apni Party is all set to call a meeting to discuss the matter threadbare.
“Pertinently a year ago, leaders were quitting the Congress but today they are going back and this has unnerved the regional parties,” said a political observer.
