DPAP on crutches
8/8/2023 10:48:02 PM

The recent loss of 21 more leaders from the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), launched by former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, has raised questions about the party’s viability and the motivations behind these defections.
Speculations abound that these leaders joined DPAP with the expectation that Azad would gain power in J&K after leaving the Congress party. But it seems that their hopes were dashed as the DAPP emerged as one among the regional parties in J&K.
The launch of the DAPP was initially met with much enthusiasm among political circles. Ghulam Nabi Azad’s stature, experience, and previous role as a prominent Congress leader and former J&K chief minister gave credibility to the new party.
His departure from Congress presented an opportunity for him to forge a new approach and garner the support of disillusioned politicians within the region.
It is plausible that some leaders joined the DPAP with high expectations that Azad would emerge as a strong contender for power in J&K. Many believed that his departure from the Congress party signified a desire to pursue a more prominent role in the region’s politics. With the Congress losing its foothold in J&K, Azad’s emergence as a key political player seemed like a possibility.
However, the reality of the power dynamic in J&K proved more complex than anticipated. The regional political landscape has left little room for the emergence of a clear alternative.
The DPAP, despite its initial promise, failed to gain substantial traction and struggled to generate a wave of meaningful support that could challenge the existing power structure.
The recent exodus of leaders from DPAP back to the Congress party can be seen as a calculated reassessment of political options.
As the DPAP faced challenges in gaining momentum, it became apparent that Azad’s path to power might be far more challenging than initially believed.
The return to Congress by many DPAP leaders reflects their disappointment.
However, the Congress in J&K is facing issues like infighting within the party and losing its foothold in the areas that were believed to be its bastions in the past.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the party would be able to accommodate the rush or it would crumble under its own weight.
