UIET, Kathua Campus (JU) organizes a Tree Talk on the fourth day

KATHUA, Aug 10: University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Kathua Campus (JU) organized a tree talk titled "Heritage Trees and Sacred Groves" under the Green Campus Initiative on the fourth day of One Week Long Plantation Drive. The resource person was Om Prakash Vidyarthi (IFoS), Retd. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, (J&K). He is a member of J&K Biodiversity and Wild Life Board. He was also awarded with Sahitya Akademi Award-2002 and authored more than 50 books.
The event was aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our natural heritage and fostering a deeper connection to the environment. On the fourth day, the students of the campus enthusiastically participated in the initiative of "Green Campus Selfie" moment where they showed off their proud accomplishment by taking a selfie with their planted sapling.
Vidyarthi discussed the significance of heritage trees and sacred groves and shared his insights on the cultural, ecological, and spiritual value of these natural wonders. He said that sacred trees and groves hold a unique place in our hearts and cultures and are preserved for their spiritual significance. He added that heritage trees serve living testaments to the history as they have witnessed the generations that offered vital habitat for countless species. He also highlighted that heritage trees and sacred groves stabilize soil, prevent erosion, contribute to nutrient cycling, and provides shade, reducing heat effect and support biodiversity.
Dr. Meenakshi Kilam, Rector, Kathua Campus (JU) admired the resource person for engrossing everyone in the captivating world of the natural wonders, exploring their significance, ecological importance, and cultural heritage. She said that sacred groves are repositories of cultural heritage that symbolizes ancient beliefs and offer a serene environment for reflection, meditation, and connection with nature. She also stressed that it is our responsibility to protect them as it encompasses the preservation of cultural and spiritual traditions. Further she added that the vibrant plantation drive aligns with the institution's broader vision of instilling eco-consciousness among its students and inspiring a generation of responsible global citizens.
Dr. Sourabh Shastri, I/c Coordinator, UIET, Kathua Campus (JU) welcomed and expressed gratitude to the resource person. He said that as everyone continues their journey towards a greener campus and a more sustainable future, all should remember that our actions today shape the world for generations to come.
Dr. Kanika Bhadwal coordinated the whole programme and Er. Puneet Kour delivered vote of thanks.
