Sadhotra calls for withdrawal of high power bills, prepaid smart meter tariff

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 12: Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, former minister and senior National Conference leader, has demanded the immediate withdrawal of inflated power bills and the rollback of the prepaid smart meter tariff mechanism. Addressing National Conference workers in Marh Assembly Constituency, Sadhotra criticized the government's decision to implement high power tariffs and the prepaid payment system, which has left many poor and marginalized consumers without electricity during the hot summer months.
Sadhotra attributed the issues of high electricity consumption readings and exorbitant tariff bills to the malfunctioning smart meters and criticized the government's response blaming it on computer errors. He accused the BJP-led government of taking revenge on the people for rejecting their policies and subjecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir to harassment.
He further criticized the prepaid smart metering mechanism, which requires people struggling to make ends meet to prepay substantial amounts to access electricity. He termed this approach a gross violation of human rights and accused the administration of insensitivity.
Sadhotra expressed concern over erratic power supply and unscheduled cuts, holding the Power Development Department responsible for not anticipating power requirements and making adequate arrangements.
He emphasized that the National Conference cannot remain silent in the face of such suffering and called for accountability from the double engine government. He also welcomed new entrants to the National Conference and expressed hope that their dedication would strengthen the party.
Prominent leaders who also addressed the meeting included Raghubir Singh, Rakesh Sharma, Ghar Singh, Charanjeet Singh, and others.
