Dostana: After Omar, Dr Abdullah bats for Mirwaiz

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 18: A few days after former Chief Minister and National Conference, Vice President, Omar Abdullah came out in support of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Omar’s predecessor and NC President, Dr Farooq Abdullah spoke in support of the Hurriyat leader.
Talking to reporters in Srinagar on August 18, Dr Abdullah who is also the Member Parliament from Srinagar questioned the administration over why Mirwaiz was not being allowed to move out of his home especially for the Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid Nowhatta.
“Why is he (Mirwaiz) not being allowed to come out? Why are restrictions in place?” Dr Abdullah questioned.
Interestingly whereas in the past the NC and the Mirwaiz group used to be arch rivals in politics in Srinagar as Sher and Bakra, the winds of change are visible where the Abdullahs openly show their concern for the separatist leader.
Last month, Omar Abdullah had dropped a bombshell saying that Hurriyat Chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had given up politics and that thus he should be allowed to venture out of his home at Nigeen.
Omar had said that Mirwaiz should be allowed to focus on the social and religious issues and that he should be allowed to offer Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid.
“He has given up politics and he now wants to focus on social and religious issues alone but still he is not being allowed to offer prayers at Jamia Masjid,” Omar had told the media persons.
What’s interesting is that the Mirwaiz never reacted to Omar’s statement since.
The general perception in political circles is that there could be understanding between the NC and Mirwaiz factions.
“This is Kashmir and here nobody shows any such concern in politics without understanding,” said an observer.
To mention, Omar Abdullah had alleged that Friday prayers were not being allowed in Jamia Masjid Nowhatta whereas just a day after his statement the Srinagar police posted pictures of prayers being held there making the former CM’s claims fall flat.
