LEH, Aug 21: Amit Sharma (IAS), the Secretary of Transport for the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh, inaugurated and flagged off an exciting initiative that brings sustainable energy solutions to Ladakh's freight sector. The event, held at Hotel-The Zen in Leh, marked the launch of electric freight vehicles, a significant step towards carbon neutrality and a greener future.
Sanjay Dube, President & CEO of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), set the stage with opening remarks on "Evfying last mile freight in UT Ladakh." Narayankumar Sreekumar, Associate Director of the Electric Mobility Program at Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, provided an insightful project briefing.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Sharma commended the technical assistance team for their efforts in decarbonizing the freight segment, aligning with the Carbon Neutral Ladakh Plan. He emphasized the feasibility of transitioning road freight to a zero-emission mode through faster adoption of zero-emission trucks. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from diesel soot, CO2, and methane is crucial to combat climate change, he noted.
Amit Sharma stressed the significance of technological efficiency improvements, vehicle electrification, deep decarbonization, and low-carbon fuel usage in achieving emissions reduction in the transportation sector. He highlighted the positive trajectory of the zero-emission truck industry, emphasizing battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) powered by renewable energy. The initiative holds historical importance for Ladakh, signifying a pivotal step towards Carbon Neutral Ladakh. Amit Sharma acknowledged the administration's policies and decisions that contribute to Ladakh's sustainable future.
The event witnessed the presence of key figures including Dr. Zulfiqar Ali (KAS), Deputy Director of Motor Garages, UT Ladakh; ARTO Officers from Leh and Kargil; heads of various transport departments; technical teams from IIEC; and representatives from the Knowledge Partner, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
