Congress-Azad ‘headhunting’ heats up
7 councilors join DPAP, former J&K Chief Minister accords them warm welcome

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 21: A day after the Congress nominated the senior Congress leaders from Kashmir, GA Mir and Tariq Karra into Congress Working Committee, the party rebel and veteran politician, Ghulam Nabi Azad managed to take away as many as seven councilors from the “grand old party” into his Democratic Progressive Azad Party or DPAP in Kashmir.
A former Chief Minister, Azad, hosted an event at his residence in Srinagar to welcome the new entrants into his party from Congress saying the DPAP would work ahead to make all of them win in the upcoming Urban Local Body elections.
Azad told the new entrants that the party would leave no stone unturned for campaigning during the upcoming ULB polls. One the rebel councilors who joined Azad group has already won two elections at the SMC and looks ahead for third victory.
Sources said the DPAP looks ahead to contest from all the wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation in particular as it happens to be the summer capital.
Sources said the DPAP led by Azad wanted to give a shocker to the Congress after its decisions on the CWC nominations from Kashmir.
Observers said through this card Azad has sent a message to the Congress that the party was not in the control of its leaders in Kashmir and that DPAP was an option for them.
The development also coincides with senior Congress leader and Member Parliament Rahul Gandhi having been on a visit to the neighboring Ladakh.
“The councilors from Congress have joined the DPAP soon after CWC held its crucial meeting in Delhi and Rahul Gandhi was in Ladakh, so this development has a big political message,” said an observer.
Recently some of the leaders from Congress who had joined Azad group last year had shifted back to the Congress putting the DPAP to humiliation of sorts.
Sources said the DPAP has assured the rebel councilors from Congress of “full support into the issues they are facing.”
