BJP Government and NHAI clash over Sarore Toll Plaza Issue: Rattan Lal Gupta speaks out
8/24/2023 10:54:01 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 24: Rattan Lal Gupta, the Provincial President of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), strongly criticized the recent crackdown on youth participating in a peaceful protest demanding the removal of toll collection at the Sarore Toll Post. He called for the immediate release of the detained protestors and lambasted the BJP Government at the Centre for what he termed a contradictory stance on the matter.
In a press statement, Rattan Lal Gupta highlighted the conflicting views between Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on the issue. He pointed out that Nitin Gadkari had stated in the Parliament that a minimum distance of 60 kilometers should be maintained between two toll plazas. However, the NHAI's Regional Officer in Jammu and Kashmir presented a completely opposing interpretation of the rules, defending the presence of two toll points at Sarore and Ban.
Citing Rule 8(2) of the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, Gupta quoted Nitin Gadkari's statement that no other fee plaza on the same section of the national highway and in the same direction should be established within a distance of sixty kilometers.
Gupta criticized the NHAI for not considering the stretch from Sarore to Ban on the same section of National Highway-44, which is approximately 45 kilometers long. He described this oversight as unjustified and expressed concern that the BJP Government's statements and NHAI's actions were creating confusion and chaos among the public.
Furthermore, Rattan Lal Gupta criticized the administration led by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha for failing to address the concerns of the people, leading to widespread protests in the Jammu region. He called upon Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to provide clarity on the issue and to ensure that the people of Jammu find relief from the ongoing toll plaza controversy.
In conclusion, Rattan Lal Gupta appealed to the LG administration to release all detained protesters without any delay and to take appropriate steps to resolve the toll plaza issue in a manner that respects the rights and demands of the people.
