Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 25: In an emergency meeting of various Sikh organizations in Jammu and Kashmir, members gathered under the leadership of S. Mohinder Singh, Chief Organizer of Bhai Kanahiya Nishkam Sewa Society J&K and Ex-member DGPC Jammu. The unanimous decision of the meeting was to lend their support to the Jammu band call scheduled for August 26, 2023. The aim is to amplify the collective voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and protest against the perceived indifferent attitude of both the central government and the administration of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. The protesters demand the removal of toll plazas and smart meters. The ongoing hardships faced by the people, including soaring commodity prices and unemployment, have ignited this call for action.
Sikh organizations in J&K appealed to both the central government and the Jammu and Kashmir government to immediately release all arrested leaders and protestors who were advocating against toll plazas. The Jammu band call has been initiated by the Jammu Commerce and Industries Association.
As road conditions deteriorate, the protesters assert that charging toll from financially disadvantaged individuals is unjustified. Furthermore, grievances about the newly installed smart meters have emerged, with allegations of meters running at excessive speeds and generating bills in lakhs. This has led to suspicions of a nexus exploiting the vulnerable population, a situation that Sikh organizations find intolerable.
The meeting was attended by a number of prominent figures from various Sikh organizations, including S. Darbinder Singh (President of Shiromani Akali Dal J&K), S. Rajinder Singh (General Secretary of Shiromani Akali Dal J&K), S. Gajan Singh (President of J&K Motor Transport Company Association), and several other leaders representing different sectors of society.
Sikh organizations J&K have urged the community to stand united in support of the Jammu band call. This collective effort aims to draw attention to the pressing issues faced by the people of the region and compel authorities to address their concerns promptly.
