Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 26: The Women Sub-Committee of Northern Zone Insurance Employees' Association, representing women LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) employees from Jammu & Kashmir, organized a Women Convention at Press Club Jammu on August 26, 2023. Women LIC employees from Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, and Doda attended the convention, led by Com. Neelam Sharma, the Convener of the women's sub-committee of Jammu and Kashmir.
Comrade Neeta Singhal from Delhi, the Women Convener of North Zone, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In her speech, Com. Neeta Singhal criticized the policies of the union government that have contributed to the deteriorating condition of women workers, rising incidents of violence against women, sexual harassment at workplaces, and other issues affecting women in society. She demanded a 33% reservation for women in parliament and state assemblies, as well as the implementation of CHILD CARE LEAVE for a two-year period for women in LIC. She also emphasized the need to increase family pensions to 30% of the basic pay, a demand pending with the government for almost four years.
Com. Neelam Sharma, Convener of Jammu and Kashmir, discussed the issue of violence against women, referencing incidents in Manipur and the increasing crimes against women. She encouraged women to stand united and fight for their rights. Com. Pawan Gupta strongly advocated for the scrapping of the National Pension System (NPS) and the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for all, highlighting the social security benefits it provides in old age.
Other speakers included Com. Sushma Jamwal (Co-Convener), Anuradha Gupta, Shunali Gupta, Priya Sharma (Members), and various LIC employees who shared their insights and concerns. The event also welcomed special guests from the NZIEA Divisional Committee Srinagar, including Rajesh Gupta, Raj Kumar Sharma (Joint Secretaries), Dinesh Sharma (Vice President), Rajesh Kumar (Treasurer), Mohan Lal, and Raj Kumar. The Women Convention aimed to address pertinent issues affecting women employees, promoting unity and collective action for their rights and well-being. The event underscored the importance of advocating for gender equality and ensuring a supportive environment for women in the workforce and society.
