GMC Jammu advances cancer care with new radiation therapy telecobalt machine
8/26/2023 10:08:35 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 26: In a significant stride towards improving cancer care, the radiation oncology department at GMC Jammu has initiated patient treatment using a state-of-the-art telecobalt machine. Spearheaded by Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, along with Dr. Rahul Sharma, Associate Professor and head of administration for radiation oncology, the department has successfully begun radiation therapy treatment for cancer patients on the newly installed ultra-modern telecobalt machine.
This cutting-edge machine, christened in honor of the eminent nuclear scientist Dr. Homi Bhabha, has received approval from the atomic energy regulatory board. Notably, the machine is a proud achievement under the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiative, with a price tag of around 4 crores - a fraction of the cost when imported from abroad.
Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, along with the oncology team, highlighted the advanced features of the digitally-operated machine. Its precision is remarkably high, controlled via a single tablet manipulated by the treatment team. Additionally, the machine can shape radiation fields for enhanced accuracy, capable of treating over 80 patients daily.
Furthermore, Dr. Gupta revealed that the State Cancer Institute at GMC Jammu is on track to operationalize a PET scan machine in the near future. Other pivotal facilities such as operation theatres, linear accelerators, and CT simulators are also set to be functional shortly.
This marks a significant milestone for cancer care in Jammu, as the city is poised to offer comprehensive services ranging from preventive oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology, palliative care, to cancer rehabilitation - all under one roof. The efforts of the medical professionals and the strides taken by GMC Jammu promise improved accessibility and quality of care for cancer patients in the region.
