Early Times Report
REASI, Aug 30: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, which operates under the administrative oversight of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), is taking proactive steps to promote and guide rural youths in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir towards raising dual-purpose poultry breeds (for eggs and meat). This initiative is in line with the vision of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. BN Tripathi, and under the guidance of Prof. SK Gupta, Director Extension (DE) of SKUAST-J.
The primary aim of KVK is to augment farm income and generate employment opportunities for rural youths, thereby curbing migration to urban areas in search of work. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, explained that the center has introduced egg and meat poultry breeds as part of the Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture (ARYA) project in Reasi district. This move is intended to make rural youths self-sufficient, as these improved breeds exhibit enhanced egg-laying capacity and better potential for body weight gain.
Dr. Lal emphasized that these breeds boast improved survivability rates and offer supplementary income and nutrition through both eggs and meat, contributing to the economic welfare of rural youths. The ARYA project's objective is to foster agri-entrepreneurship among rural youths, with scientific poultry farming emerging as a viable enterprise for augmenting farm income.
Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) on both meat and egg-laying poultry breeds have been initiated by KVK in farmers' fields under the ARYA project. These demonstrations serve to showcase the technology and techniques to rural youths. The improved poultry breeds, according to Dr. Lal, are capable of producing approximately 160-210 eggs per year and yield more meat.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi highlighted the importance of proper housing, feeding, health, and marketing management in ensuring the sustainability of poultry farming. He emphasized that poultry eggs and meat are in high demand in the market, providing rural youths with an opportunity to achieve higher returns through sales. Dr. Qureshi also stressed the significance of branding in expanding marketing channels for farm produce.
The success stories of local poultry rearers who have benefited from rearing improved poultry breeds are motivating many rural youths to venture into poultry farming. This initiative not only enhances the economic prospects of rural areas but also contributes to local agricultural entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
