JAMMU, Aug 31: To commemorate National Sports Day and align with the Fit India and Viksit Yuva Viksit Bharat movement initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, GDC Ghagwal orchestrated a vibrant 5-day Intra-College Sports Meet titled "Major Dhyan Chand Alpha Velocity."
Under the guidance of Principal Dr. Sujata Slathia, the college organized a series of sports events to honor the 118th Birth Anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand Singh, an iconic figure in Indian hockey. The Sports Convenor, Dr. Vani Awasthi, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and NCORD Unit of the College, spearheaded this weeklong celebration of a healthy and active lifestyle, aligning with the Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The opening ceremony took place on August 25, 2023, with Principal Dr. Sujata Slathia urging students to actively participate in such events. She inaugurated the series of games, setting the tone for an engaging and spirited event.
The sports meet commenced with a Quiz Competition centered around Nasha Mukti Abhiyan (Anti-Drug Campaign) and General Knowledge related to sports. Teams named Dhyan Chand, Neeraj Chopra, P.T. Usha, Sachin Tendulkar, and Milkha Singh participated. Team Dhyan Chand emerged victorious, showcasing their knowledge and teamwork. The runners-up were Team Sachin Tendulkar. The quiz consisted of three rounds and was observed by Dr. Deepika Sharma, Head of the Dogri Department. Scorekeeping and timekeeping were managed by Ms. Amrita Sharma and Ms. Nisha Bhagat, respectively.
On the same day, a chess competition was held, with Vishal Singh Jasrotia emerging as the winner and Sumit Katal as the runner-up. The chess matches were supervised by Mr. Tushar Sangra.
Continuing the momentum, a Cricket Match was organized on August 26, where both boys and girls competed together. Kapil Dev's Fearless Fighters emerged victorious, with Sahil Khajuria leading the team. Ram Gutti was declared the man of the match. The umpire for the match was Mr. Mukesh Kumar.
A Girls Kho-Kho match was held on August 28, with Team Mary Kom emerging as the winner. The second half of the day saw several sets of individual Badminton matches, which had to be postponed due to weather conditions.
August 29 featured a Kabaddi match for boys, with Team Pawan Kumar Sehrawat securing a victory. An athletic race was also conducted, with Preeti Kumari and Aniket Kumar winning the 100-meter races for girls and boys, respectively.
As the event concluded successfully, a valedictory function on September 1, 2023, will feature the FIT INDIA Pledge. Notably, winning sports players will receive Certificates of Appreciation from Principal Dr. Sujata Slathia and senior professors, honoring their talents.
Principal Dr. Sujata Slathia highlighted that the event aimed to channel students' energy into constructive activities, promoting a healthy lifestyle and discouraging involvement in harmful habits. She praised Indian sports achievements and emphasized the importance of a sound mind in a healthy body.
The event not only celebrated sportsmanship but also instilled the values of fitness, teamwork, and discipline among the students. Refreshments were provided to participants throughout the event, contributing to its overall success.
