Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 9: Much like the Jammu Municipal Corporation where some of the prominent leaders from the Bharatiya Janta Party may lose their seats to reservation for the upcoming Urban Local Body polls, the Kashmir based regional parties may face similar situation at Srinagar Municipal Corporation or SMC.
With the J&K Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) issuing notification for the reservation of wards for women, Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (ST), the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Apni Party and the Peoples Conference may lose hope of their prominent leaders contesting from their respective constituencies in Srinagar.
Sources said the probable faces for Mayorship at SMC from the National Conference, Apni Party and the Peoples Conference may lose their stronghold constituencies to the reservations.
Sources said the prominent faces from the NC and Apni Party, who had been working hard in particular wards hoping to contest elections from there are apprehending that their dreams will be shattered even before the elections are held.
“When the main faces cannot contest from their strongholds, the fate of parties in such elections can only be imagined,” said a political observer in the know of the matter.
Interestingly while the regional parties from Kashmir are facing this scene in Srinagar, the ruling BJP is facing a similar situation in Jammu.
Ward number 16 of Prem Nagar New Plot, presently represented by the sitting Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has been reserved for women and ward number 56, represented by sitting Deputy Mayor Baldev Singh Billowaria is for Scheduled Caste women.
The CEO has notified wards to be reserved for women, Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the municipal bodies of the Union Territory (UT) while the objections if any have been sought.
“Any objections or suggestions should reach the Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, Nirvachan Bhawan Rail Head Complex, Jammu, or Darul Intikhab, M A Road, Srinagar, within 5 days from the issuance of this notice, i.e., September 9, 2023, after which no objections or suggestions shall be entertained,” read the notice issued J&K CEO Pandurang K Pole.
