Kashmir based parties indulge in political tug-of-war, people disillusioned
11/24/2023 8:10:17 PM

Srinagar, Nov 24: Kashmir-based political parties have shifted their focus from addressing the immediate concerns of the common man to engaging in a power play, each claiming to be the sole viable option for the people.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “ A different kind of battle is unfolding in Kashmir, one that is less about the everyday struggles of the people and more about political supremacy. Traditional parties, such as National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others are vying for attention by emphasizing their historical significance and claiming to be the only remedy for the region’s challenges.”
“The rhetoric has taken a turn away from the pressing issues that touch the lives of the common man. Instead of addressing issues of a common man, political leaders are choosing to raise the pitch on the importance of their return to power. This shift in focus seems to be a strategic move to divert attention from their failure to deliver on promises made in the past,” he added.
“Former J&K chief minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah has been vocal about his party’s historical role in shaping the destiny of Kashmir. In his speeches, he is highlighting the need for experienced leadership to navigate the socio-political landscape of the region. The NC is claiming that it has a rich past about fighting for the rights of the people,” the analyst said.
“On the other side of the aisle, the PDP, led by Mehbooba Mufti, is presenting itself as the true representative of the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. She is claiming that when her party was in power they worked for the welfare of the people,” he added.
President of the Apni Party, Altaf Bukhari, according to the observers, “is making every possible attempt to discredit NC and PDP and is blaming them for J&K remaining backward.”
“The disconnect between the political rhetoric and everyday struggles of a common man has created a void between the people and the political leaders. The politicians should understand that they need to address the problems of people rather than playing political games,” said an observer.
“The political tug-of-war has led to a growing sense of disillusionment among the people who are yearning for genuine leadership that prioritizes their welfare over political maneuvering. The upcoming elections will serve as a litmus test, determining whether the political parties can reconnect with the pulse of the people or if the power play will continue to overshadow the real issues,” he added.
