Efforts of Mehbooba proving futile, Omar sends clear signals of estrangement
I.N.D.I. A alliance in dock

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 8: The political landscape in Kashmir is witnessing a seismic shift as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) grapples with internal turmoil and external challenges in a bid to stay relevant.
The party, led by Mehbooba Mufti, is making desperate attempts to ensure that both parties remain a part of the I.N.D.I.A alliance, however, signals from the National Conference (NC) suggest a divergence of interests.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Recent developments indicate a growing rift within the alliance as NC vice-president Omar Abdullah has sent clear signals of a potential estrangement.”
He said, “Omar has been dropping enough hints that his party is not interested in alliance with the PDP and in the recent past he has cited many instances of fundamental ideological differences between the two parties.”
The PDP, according to the observers, has sensed the precariousness of the situation. “It has launched a flurry of efforts to maintain cohesion. Efforts of Mehbooba Mufti seem to be going in a vain as the growing distance between the PDP and NC threatens to undermine the very foundation of the I.N.D.I.A alliance.”
Observers are of the opinion that the strained relationship between the two parties stems from a series of political and strategic differences. “NC has been openly blaming PDP for J&K losing its special status and statehood, while PDP second rung leaders have been accusing NC of being a power hungry party,” said an observer.
He said, “The PDP’s desperation to salvage the alliance is underscored by the volatile political landscape in Kashmir and its disintegration. The PDP, which once held significant political influence, is grappling with a loss of popular support and relevance.”
According to the media reports PDP is also mulling to stay away from the Lok Sabha elections. “PDP leadership is aware of the fact that the participation in the polls could prove to be an uphill task for the party. One thing is clear – the PDP’s struggle for relevance is at a crossroads,” said an observer.
