Omar, Mehbooba left with nothing to sell
Disillusioned former J&K chief ministers go in a shell, take pause

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 14: Former J&K chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have announced temporary retreats from active politics.
Omar , citing a need to "re energize himself" has declared a break until the new year, while Mehbooba has opted for a one-week suspension to "reflect on the current situation."
Both leaders have attributed their decisions to the Supreme Court's recent verdict upholding the central government's abrogation of Article 370, which granted the erstwhile state of J&K special status. Omar had announced on social media that he is disappointed and he is going off the grid till new year. Mehbooba had claimed that PDP activities will remain suspended to express solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
While the stated reasons for their pauses appear introspective, analysts offer a more nuanced interpretation. Some see it as a sign of political exhaustion and disillusionment. "Both leaders had promised the people that they could bring back the special status," a political commentator told Early Times.
"The verdict has shattered that promise, leaving them with little to offer and no clear path forward,” he added.
Whatever their motivations, the simultaneous withdrawals of Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, two of J&K's most prominent political figures, have created a significant vacuum in the region's political landscape. The question now hangs heavy: is this a temporary pause or a permanent exit?
The answer, it seems, lies in the hearts and minds of the people of Kashmir. Their response to this leadership vacuum.
“Whether the leaders' pauses mark a moment of introspection, a strategic retreat, or a turning point in their political careers, only time will tell. But one thing is certain, both the leaders seem to have understood that their political careers are at the crossroads,” said an observer.
