Srinagar, Dec 19: Freezing cold conditions intensified in Kashmir Valley as Pahalgam recorded the season's coldest night at -6.9C and Srinagar at -3.7C on Tuesday, officials said. The Meteorological Center Srinagar said Pahalgam recorded the season's coldest night at -6.9C, compared to the -5.8C recorded the previous night. It was 2.5C below normal for the tourist hot spot in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Many parts of south Kashmir recorded the coldest night of the season, including Anantnag (-5.1C), Pulwama (-5.5C), Shopian (-6.8C), and Kulgam (-3.2C) on Tuesday.
The mercury plummeted in Srinagar and was recorded at -3.7C against the 0.5C recorded the previous night. It was 2.2C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
The maximum temperature in Srinagar was 2.0C above the normal of 9.0C recorded the previous day.
The night temperature at Gulmarg shows an improvement after experiencing the coldest night of the season at -8.0C on Monday, which was recorded at -6.6C on Tuesday. It was 1.8C below normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir.
Qazigund, on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir, plunged to -4.2C against the 0.8C recorded a day ago, while Kokernag recorded a low of -3.1C against the 1.1C recorded the previous night.
Kupwara dipped to -3.1C against the 2.2C recorded the previous night. It was 1.4C below normal for the frontier north Kashmir district, the MeT office said.
The weather will mainly remain dry till December 23, and from December 24-26, it will be generally cloudy with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches, the MET office said, adding that "overall, there is no significant weather activity till December 26."
