Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 20: In a major breakthrough, the Economic Offences Wing–Crime Branch Jammu has presented a charge-sheet against S. Tharagaval, the proprietor of New M.M.S and Sons, in a case involving a staggering Rs 1.85 Crore coal fraud. The accused, hailing from Tamil Nadu, is facing charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust related to the delivery of charcoal.
The case (FIR No.32/2013 P/S Crime Branch Jammu) originated from a written complaint filed by Shri Tapan Dubey, Director of Shree Sita Ram Industries Pvt. Ltd., Bari Brahmana Jammu. Dubey alleged that he had placed an order with Tharagaval for charcoal supply, initially valued at Rs 1,04,00,000/-. Despite paying half of the amount, the accused later demanded a rate hike, leading to an additional payment of Rs 1,45,05,900/ by Dubey. However, the accused failed to deliver the material, and upon partial delivery, it was discovered that instead of charcoal, mud, sand, and dust were supplied, causing a loss of ₹1,84,85,573/-.
: A preliminary verification initiated by the Economic Offences Wing revealed that the material supplied by Tharagaval was not charcoal, as promised, but rather mud, sand, and dust. The accused, with malafide intentions, had allegedly lured Dubey through fraudulent means, inducing him to deposit a substantial sum of money, ultimately cheating and duping him of ₹1,84,85,573/-. The investigation involved the seizure of relevant records, recording statements of witnesses, and collecting scientific and circumstantial evidence.
The charge-sheet presented in the court of law establishes offenses under the Ranbir Penal Code against Tharagaval. The accused is now set to face in-depth investigation and legal proceedings for his alleged role in the coal fraud. The case highlights the need for vigilant oversight and precautions in commercial transactions to prevent fraudulent activities and protect businesses from financial losses.
The Economic Offences Wing–Crime Branch Jammu's swift action in charge-sheeting the accused underscores the commitment to combating economic crimes. The case serves as a cautionary tale for businesses to exercise due diligence in their dealings and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies promptly.
