| Chillai Kalan begins in Kashmir | | |

Srinagar, Dec 21: The 40-day-long harshest part of the winter "Chillai Kalan", known in the local parlance, begins with shiver as Srinagar records a minimum of -4.3C on Thursday, officials said.
Meteorological Centre Srinagar said Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded below 2.8C of the normal -1.5C against the -4.3C on Thursday.
The unabated cold resulted in freezing of water tapes and several water bodies in parts of iconic Dal Lake and other parts of the valley due to the impact of the falling temperatures.
The maximum temperature in Srinagar was 0.6C above the normal of 9.0C recorded the previous day. Day temperature also recorded above normal in other parts of the Kashmir valley amid sun appearing during the period.
The mercury in Pahalgam further improved and was recorded at -5.8C on Thursday against the -6.3C recorded the previous night. It was 1.4C below normal for the tourist hot spot of south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Gulmarg recorded a low of -3.0C against the -4.4C recorded a day ago. It was 1.8C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir.
Qazigund, on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir settled at-4.0C for the second consecutive day on Thursday and it was 2.4C below normal, while Kokernag recorded a low of -3.0C against the-3.3C recorded on Wednesday and it was 1.3C below normal for the famous picnic spot of south Kashmir.
The minimum temperature at Kupwara plunged to -4.0C against the-3.5C recorded the previous night. It was 2.4C below normal for the frontier north Kashmir district, the MeT office said.
The weather mainly will remain dry till December 22 and generally cloudy with possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on December 23.
The MeT office said that from December24-26 the weather will generally remain dry and on December 27 cloudy with possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches.
From December 28 till the end of the month the weather will generally remain dry, the MeT office said and added that "overall there is no significant weather activity till December 31 in Jammu and Kashmir". |
