GDC Kathua commemorates National Mathematics Day with enlightening lecture

KATHUA, Dec 22: In tribute to India's rich mathematical legacy, the Department of Mathematics at GDC Kathua organized a compelling lecture to celebrate National Mathematics Day on December 22, 2023. The event, conducted under the patronage of college Principal Prof. Seema Mir, witnessed a large and enthusiastic participation of students eager to delve into the world of numbers and equations.
Dr. Kulbir Singh, Head of the Department of Mathematics, commenced the event with an insightful talk on the life and journey of the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. He emphasized the significance of National Mathematics Day, celebrated annually on December 22, to honor Ramanujan's exceptional contributions to the field.
Dr. Singh stressed the main objective behind the celebration of National Mathematics Day - to raise awareness about the development of mathematics and its pivotal role in the progress of humanity.
Prof. Shivani Sharma, Assistant Professor in Mathematics, presented a detailed overview of the history of Indian Mathematics. She divided it into four significant periods - the ancient period, classical period, medieval period, and the modern period. Prof. Sharma highlighted key mathematical developments and the contributions of renowned Indian mathematicians across these eras.
Prof. Heena Saini urged the audience to take pride in the achievements of Indian mathematicians and emphasized the importance of disseminating knowledge about their contributions.
Dr. Ram Singh, Head of the Department of Education, and Dr. R.K. Pandita, Head of the Department of Zoology, shared their perspectives on the occasion, underlining the significance of mathematical knowledge across disciplines.
Prof. Seema Mir, the Principal of GDC Kathua, congratulated the Department of Mathematics for organizing an informative event. She acknowledged the active participation of students and expressed her hope that such initiatives would enhance students' interest in the subject.
Prof. Shivani Sharma and Prof. Heena jointly conducted the proceedings of the program, ensuring a smooth flow of information and engagement.
The event was graced by the presence of distinguished faculty members, including Dr. Ravinder Kour, Head of the Department of Physics, Dr. R. K. Manhas from the Department of Zoology, Dr. Roopinder Kour, Dr. Sukhbir Kour, Prof. Manmohan Singh, Dr. Pinky, Dr. Jagmohan Sharma, Dr. Sunil Dutt, Dr. Ram Krishan, Dr. Suman Sharma, and others.
The celebration of National Mathematics Day at GDC Kathua not only honored the legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan but also illuminated the significant contributions of Indian mathematicians throughout history.
