The recent statement of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, pledging commitment to the skill development, rehabilitation, and empowerment of Divyangjans, ignites a spark of hope for a community often marginalized and misunderstood.
By declaring them “equal partners in the economic growth of Jammu and Kashmir,” he recognizes their potential and signals a shift towards an inclusive vision of the Union Territory’s future.
For far too long, disability in J&K has been viewed through a lens of limitations, leading to social stigma, lack of access to education and employment, and ultimately, economic disenfranchisement.
LG Sinah’s announcement aims to shatter that lens, replacing it with one that sees ability, resilience, and untapped talent.
The focus on skill development is crucial. Equipping Divyangjans with market-relevant skills, catering to their specific needs, and providing training in sectors like IT, handicrafts, or entrepreneurship can open doors to meaningful employment. Rehabilitation, beyond just physical therapy, encompasses creating accessible infrastructure, providing assistive technologies, and fostering a barrier-free environment. It means ensuring public spaces, transportation systems, and educational institutions are designed with inclusivity in mind.
A ramp instead of a staircase, a sign language interpreter in a meeting, or readily available audio textbooks can transform lives, granting autonomy and participation in everyday life.
Empowerment goes beyond skill and access. It’s about fostering self-belief, creating a supportive ecosystem, and providing platforms for Divyangjans to be heard and represented. Celebrating their achievements, involving them in decision-making processes, and creating avenues for entrepreneurship can cultivate a sense of ownership and agency. Seeing someone like themselves in a leadership role or running a successful business can inspire a generation of Divyangjans to dream big and break barriers.
To empower the Divyangjans implementation of a robust and transparent plan is crucial. Identifying resources, setting measurable goals, and establishing efficient monitoring mechanisms are vital to ensure the success of this initiative. Collaboration with NGOs, disability rights groups, and the private sector are keys to leveraging expertise and mobilizing resources.
Furthermore, societal attitudes play an equally important role. The success of this initiative hinges on shifting public perception from pity to respect, from charity to collaboration. Educational campaigns, awareness programs, and media sensitization can bridge the gap between understanding and acceptance.
Recognizing and celebrating the immense contributions of Divyangjans in different fields can dismantle stereotypes and pave the way for true inclusion.
LG Sinha’s keenness to empower the Divyangjan community is a significant step towards a more equitable future for them.
