| Kashmir continues to freeze | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 3: Kashmir Valley continued to reel under severe cold, with Srinagar recording a low of -4.8C and Pahalgam -6.6 C on Wednesday.
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at -4.8 C for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. It was -2.7 C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
Parts of Dal Lake and other water bodies froze due to the impact of the temperature in Srinagar and other parts of the valley.
The maximum temperature was 4.3C above the normal of 6.9 C, against 11.2 C in Srinagar the previous day amid sun appearing during the day. The other stations in the valley also witnessed 4-5C above-normal day temperatures.
Pahalgam witnessed a further fall in the night temperature and remained the coldest place, with -6.6C on Wednesday against the -6.2C recorded the previous night. It was normal for the tourist hotspot of south Kashmir.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway slipped to a low of -4.6 C against the -4.4 C recorded the previous night, while Kokernag plunged to a low of -3.2C against the -2.7 C recorded a day ago.
The mercury at Gulmarg improved by a few notches and was recorded at -3.8C against the -4.0C recorded the previous night. It was still 3.2C above normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir.
Kupwara dropped to a low of -5.3C on Wednesday, against the -4.6C recorded a day ago. It was 2.8C below normal for the north Kashmir district, the MeT office said.
The weather is likely to remain mainly dry today and generally cloudy on January 45, with the possibility of very light snow over isolated, extreme higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, the MeT office said, adding that from January 67, the weather will mainly be dry with no significant activity. |
