NC out to grab ‘big share’, PDP in dire straits

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 15: As speculation over political alliances for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections heats up, the National Conference (NC) appears to be strategically maneuvering itself for dominance in Jammu & Kashmir.
NC with the possibility of contesting candidates in three Kashmir seats and one in Ladakh, the party is positioning itself as the key stakeholder in the state's Lok Sabha race. This leaves rivals, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Congress, facing crucial decisions.
Sources within the NC have indicated the party's intention to field candidates in Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag-Rajouri seats, while staking claim to the Ladakh seat as well. The remaining two seats, Jammu and Udhampur, are likely to be conceded to the Congress, their traditional strongholds, as part of a potential seat-sharing arrangement.
This aggressive posture by the NC presents a significant challenge to the PDP, led by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Despite being part of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance, an opposition coalition including the NC, the PDP stands to lose big if the proposed seat distribution holds. With their traditional strongholds in Kashmir potentially contested by the NC, the PDP faces the unenviable choice of conceding seats or breaking away from the I.N.D.I.A. alliance altogether.
Analysts believe this development reflects the NC's attempt to capitalize on s

veral factors. The party's past performance in the District Development Council elections, securing the highest number of seats, has bolstered its confidence. Additionally, the ongoing political vacuum in Kashmir, with the abrogation of Article 370 and the absence of Assembly elections, provides an opportunity for the NC to fill the void.
However, the path ahead is not without obstacles. Internal factions within the NC remain a point of concern, and the party's leadership will need to navigate competing interests to present a united front. Additionally, the BJP cannot be underestimated. The party's strong organizational structure and ability to tap into nationalist sentiment remain potent forces in Jammu & Kashmir's political landscape.
For the Congress, strategically relinquishing Kashmir seats to the NC in exchange for Jammu could be a calculated gamble. If it proves successful, it could help them regain lost ground in their traditional base. However, any perception of being sidelined in the Valley could further erode their already dwindling support.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Jammu & Kashmir promise to be a complex and intriguing affair. With the NC emerging as the potential kingmaker, all eyes are on how the PDP and the Congress respond to this new political dynamic. The choices they make in the coming weeks could have lasting consequences for the state's political landscape and beyond.
