Sikh community in J&K unites against HC decision on surnames for Sikh recognition
1/19/2024 11:36:50 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 19: In a resolute stance, all District Gurudwara Parbandhak Committees in Jammu and Kashmir have jointly expressed their strong objection to a recent decision by the Jammu & Kashmir High Court.
The court ruled that it is not mandatory for individuals to have "Singh & Kour" as surnames for recognition as Sikh.
The committees assert that Sikh identity is deeply rooted in the conduct blessed by the Sikh Gurus, emphasizing the historical significance of "Singh & Kour" as titles bestowed by the Tenth Guru. These titles, they argue, symbolize numerous sacrifices and well-defined principles integral to Sikhism.
The objection comes in response to the judgment of the Appellate authority, ADC Jammu, which dismissed the petitioner's claim, citing the Jammu & Kashmir Gurudwaras and Religious Endowment Act 1973. The judgment deems the petitioner's contention contrary to the defined criteria.
S. Balvinder Singh, Vice President of DGPC Jammu, reveals communication with S. Harjinder Singh Dhami, President Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar. They assure consultation with SGPC's legal panel for updates on the matter, highlighting the commitment to navigate the situation.
Members of the District Gurudwara Parbandak Committees in Jammu and Kashmir reiterate their assurance to the Sikh community.
They express their capability to navigate the situation following the Jammu & Kashmir High Court announcement and confirm their decision to address the matter at the most suitable forum.
In solidarity, the committees emphasize their readiness to act in coordination with SGPC and their legal team.
They express a willingness to seek amendments in the Jammu & Kashmir Gurudwaras and Religious Endowment Act 1973 if deemed necessary, remaining firm in upholding the sanctity of Sikh identity and values.
The Sikh community in Jammu & Kashmir stands united against the recent High Court decision, affirming their commitment to preserving the rich cultural and religious heritage associated with Sikh identity.
